My Chinese name 彥廷 - roughly means “the pursuit of knowledge” and “balance or justice”. I use to joke it’s because my parents met as civil servants but over time, like a well-worn wool coat molding to a body, these big ideas began to take shape in my life and the ways I move through the world.
The more I learn, the more I understand justice is always intersectional, for instance there is no unpacking sustainability without addressing things like colonialism or the distribution of resources like wages, food and water. Therefore design, to me, has the ability to be hope in action - to use tools like research, systems thinking, material innovation and data visualization to reveal non-dominant narratives, provide clear understanding for more nuanced discussions and decision-making.
I believe in design that is joyful, honest and opens doors for courageous conversations and different perspectives. After focusing on gathering and designing from qualitative data for the last 4 years, I’m currently most interested in social impact design and art-based research (or the ways we can use co-creation to generate meaningful ethnographies and uncover nuanced insights into key decision making about products, systems and service planning).
