DaisyCode was returning to VOGUE Taiwan’s Fashion Night Out with a collaboration with PRADA early 2019. The goal was to debut DaisyCode as a high-art lifestyle brand in addition to its legacy of science-based skin care products in Taiwan and the growing international presence of founder Daisy Hsiang’s high-concept editorial photography.

The sticker artwork is an original self-portrait titled The Breaking Point (acrylic on canvas). I chose it for its echo of the crackling pattern of the watermelon but more so, continuing the themes of outside vs. inside and Trompe-l'œil, it is a piece that explores the external and internal fragmentation of the self. Growing up in an immigrant family, life is often a rich blending of culture, histories and contradictions. Like jumping from one board game to the other, the work, school and home selves can develop independently of one another. The differences are sometimes funny, sad and insightful. How often do the identities which sustain also imprisons us?
The Breaking Point (2009) is a part of a collection following a young woman “getting ready” for the future - putting on make up, showering, choosing garments. Some practices are distinctly North American, some tools are rooted in traditions of my birthplace, Hong Kong. Like in a whirlpool lifting anchors rooted in time and place, they all collide to take a new form in me. Perhaps mundane on the outside, but in each washroom there is a chance to decide who you will be for the day.
I enlisted the talents of local soap-maker ByIris to obtain samples and imagine the theme, colour and scents for 50 limited-edition artisan bars she hand-crafted in BC with ethically sourced, simple, organic ingredients.

Being the well-rounded professional I am, I shot this one afternoon in the backyard on my iPhone. Jokes, though I’ve been blessed to worked with many talented photographers I personally have no idea what I am doing. Regardless there’s something to be said about trying your best, no matter how much more qualified or equipped other’s seem. Great things come to those who can suspend disbelief in themselves and others.
Special Edition Postcard - I produced a postcard intended for shopper along with the care package and this image was also used to introduce the product digitally on social media and on different websites along with the other products in the care package.
